Say No to the Dress!

Bridesmaids

It feels like we’ve been doing lots of wedding related posts, but as most people know, when you start reaching a certain age it seems everyone around you starts getting married! My first post was about a wedding I attended, and Mia’s about a wedding she will be in next year. They both revolve around what you wear to, or in a wedding, but this is a little more focused. It’s about what not to wear, as a bride.

I, along with many of my friends and colleagues, love the show “Say Yes to the Dress“. Now with shows filmed in Atlanta and New York, this show has something for aspiring brides across the country. The show truly tries to match every girl with her perfect dress, which often means trying on a few not so perfect dresses along the way.

Fabulous for a Las Vegas nightclub

My only complaint about this show, is that one dress is constantly recurring in scene after scene on bride after bride is an abomination to fashion itself. I really don’t like to put down a designer, because it’s a creative job, driven by artistic expression. But these particular dresses by Pnina Tornai would only be appropriate in a gentlemans club, or maybe a Madonna tribute. The concepts, design, craftsmanship, etc. are beautiful on these gowns, which makes it that much more frustrating that they are ruined by adding sheer lace where sheer lace should NEVER appear! What girl who’s spent months dieting and working out wants to show everyone her “almost there” abs, or not so tight tummy? Not me! A corset is meant to hold it in! Lace does the opposite!

I am not one to tout the uber modest styles from decades past, but I also believe there is a time and place for fashionable expression. Your wedding dress should be an expression of your personal style, by all means, but can’t bring myself to call this a “style”, because lingerie, although stylish, is meant to be worn under clothes.

If you happen to be Kendra, Holly, or Bridget, and would wear lingerie in front of your Grandmother, by all means, don’t let me stop you. But the majority of women would like to appear slightly “angelic” on their wedding date, and a sheer corset bodice doesn’t scream “bridal”. Furthermore, Kendra (Wilkinson) Baskett didn’t wear a sheer bodice on her wedding day, so why would you?

So happy wedding dress shopping to all of you newly engaged brides out there, and happy window shopping/web surfing to all aspiring brides, and if you’re lucky enough to be featured on Say Yes to the Dress, let them know you’ll pass on trying anything with a sheer bodice.
